Strengthening Community Bonds in Challenging Times

In today’s shifting landscape, nonprofits like Sanctuary One are navigating significant uncertainty. Federal funding changes have created gaps in support, leaving many organizations struggling to continue their essential work. Whether it’s the reduction of resources for mental health services or disruptions in funding for community-based programs, these challenges are deeply felt across the nonprofit sector.

But here’s the thing — when traditional support systems weaken, our communities have an opportunity to step forward.

At Sanctuary One, we believe in the power of partnerships — between people, animals, and the earth. Our care farm serves as a space where healing, learning, and collaboration come together. Whether through therapeutic programs, educational experiences, or community support initiatives, we’ve seen firsthand how interconnected our efforts are.

And now, more than ever, these connections matter.

Recognizing the Core Economy

In times of uncertainty, we can draw inspiration from the concept of the Core Economy, a term coined by Edgar Cahn. While the market economy thrives on transactions and financial exchanges, the Core Economy is built on the invaluable, often unpaid contributions that sustain our society. Think of caregiving, volunteering, community support, and the networks of kindness that exist all around us.

At Sanctuary One, we see the Core Economy in action every day — through volunteers nurturing rescued animals, students learning about regenerative farming, and organizations partnering with us to provide therapeutic experiences. It’s a reminder that our collective well-being isn’t measured solely by dollars but by the strength of our relationships and our commitment to one another.

How You Can Be Part of the Solution

Addressing the gaps left by government funding requires a united effort. Here are ways you can make a meaningful impact:

 For Businesses

  • Partner with Sanctuary One to sponsor programs that create lasting community impact.
  • Engage employees in volunteer days on the farm, fostering team building while giving back.
  • Collaborate on initiatives that align with your corporate social responsibility goals.

 For Nonprofits and Organizations

  • Develop joint programs that utilize our care farm to serve your community.
  • Explore how animal-assisted therapy, gardening, or restorative experiences can enhance your services.
  • Leverage Sanctuary One as a space for educational workshops and retreats.

 For Individuals

  • Donate to help sustain our programs and support the animals, land, and people who rely on us.
  • Volunteer your time and talents — from animal care to gardening, every hand makes a difference.
  • Share your skills through mentorship, advocacy, or event participation.

Let’s Build Resilience Together

The uncertainty we face is not a barrier — it’s an opportunity. By recognizing the value of the Core Economy and fostering collaboration, we can ensure that care and compassion remain at the center of our communities.

If you’re a business seeking to make a tangible difference, a nonprofit interested in building a transformative partnership, or an individual looking to contribute your time or resources — we invite you to connect with us.

At Sanctuary One, care isn’t just what we provide — it’s who we are. And together, we can continue to cultivate a future where every act of care matters.

Thank you,
RJ Wright

Here is a photo our intern Oliven took while some of our field trip 3rd graders from Mae Richardson Elementary were visiting the Healing & Learning Garden. In the photo, we just finished talking about the vegetable garden and the native pollinator plants and were headed to the shade to talk about what reciprocity means to the Earth Care program's unique kind of community garden. Community members like volunteers and service learning groups grow food in the garden, which is in turn donated to food pantries. Community supporting community. Similarly, we also give some of the harvest to our animals who so generously gift us with their fertility-growing manure. To schedule a field trip, click this link: sanctuaryone.org/field-trips/ ...
