It was just a typical day at the Sanctuary One when the Medford Police Department called us looking for help in placing a stray duck. A random duck had been wandering around west Medford for an unknown amount of time while sustaining a severe traumatic injury. Upon arrival a little head popped out with all the feathers and skin on the backside and around the wings had been completely torn off or burnt. He was extremely emaciated and dehydrated and we were completely unaware as to how long he had been running around the city in his current condition. After an expensive veterinary visit we learned he had sustained such great injuries that even our go-to expert veterinarian Dr. Niles couldn’t figure out if he was set on fire on purpose or the original cause of his wounds. Maggots, blood, pus and burnt skin covered 30% of his body. We may never know how or why he had to go through this horrendous trauma in his short little duck life but we are thankful the Medford Police Department brought him to us. Icarus is now healing well although he is looking at an extremely lengthy recovery process. His bandages must be changed daily and we must surgically remove the dead skin covering his wounds after every bandage change. He is on an intense treatment plan for pain and antibiotic medications every 8 hours. Even with his wounds and injuries it is apparent that someone at some point truly loved this duck. He greets everyone with friendly quacks and requires one-on-one attention with the staff. Icarus is a delight to have at Sanctuary One and we are excited to help him through this traumatic ordeal. This friendly duck will have a new chance at life in a safe environment where he can quack the days away and eventually—swim free in a pond.

Tiny Tim is a male duckling brought to us by a local veterinarian after sustaining an injury to his leg. We were unsure as to how he had previously damaged his leg and even thought at one point it had been broken. He has since had proper medical treatment and is on a strict regimen of medications while recovering remarkably well. He currently resides in our office bathroom and absolutely loves it when we put fresh greens in the warm water where he can swim around and learn how to be a duck! Although we had Tiny Tim as a duckling we believe he may have been born in the wild, having to fend for himself. We have been working with his temperament and handling him every day. We believe he will make a full recovery and have full use of his leg in the not so distant future. As his adult feathers started coming we noticed he is actually a breed of domestic duck called a Cayuga. The Cayuga breed is globally endangered and nationally threatened, with fewer than 1000 known breeding pairs. They don’t primarily do well in hot sun so shade is important for their breed. In the past they have been bred for meat producers and eggs, but they also make great pets because they rarely wander from their home. They are great ducks for mixed flocks and love attention.

Howard is an unusual and beautiful Muscovy duck. He enjoys swimming, socializing with us, swimming, hanging out with our farm animals, and swimming some more. He is a fun, fantastic duck! Howard has “Angel Wing,” which is a condition that some birds get when they are fed an improper diet during their development. You will often see ducks and geese with this affliction at parks where well-meaning, but ill-informed people feed them junk food like bread and crackers. It is incurable in adults and renders them flightless, but doesn't stop them from getting around on the ground. Howard would love to find a forever pond!
