Fairy Tails

Meshach proves that animals can heal inside and out. Just before Christmas in 2011, a good Samaritan found this orange cat with severe burns on his face, ears and beneath his tail. Police concluded the fire was started intentionally with a liquid accelerant. Meshach was treated by Best Friends Animal Shelter in Talent, who dubbed him Meshach in reference to the biblical character who was saved by divine intervention after being thrown into a furnace. Meshach was transferred to Sanctuary One to continue healing and matched with his forever home.

Today's Gratitude post goes out to Jess, our Earth Care Manager! To Jess, caring for the earth fosters belonging, reciprocity and sensed connectivity between people and their ecosystems (which include one another). She is passionate about improving these relationships. Jess’s other interests include music, art, herbal medicine, and experiential ecological knowledge. Her cat, Sammy, has a great sense of humor and is ecstatic when she gets to hang out with Jess in the garden. This spring, we were awarded a grant from Jackson County Master Gardener Association Oregon to help improve the irrigation for our vegetable gardens, which are managed by numerous volunteers, service learning groups, and interns. Alongside perennial fruits, native pollinated spaces and herb and sensory beds, our Healing & Learning Garden grows food for community members in need. We partner with ACCESS, who distributes our harvests to food pantries throughout Jackson County. With the grant funding, we were able to install a more sustainable, accessible and safe irrigation system in 750 square feet of growing space. We also invested in a motion-activated sprinkler and bird netting to deter squirrels from eating our tomatoes. We are beyond pleased with this outcome, given the high squirrel pressure we have on the farm.We are happy to report that we have reciprocated 960 pounds of produce back to the community this season.
